Perilla extract shown to inhibit allergic response
"Allergies are now the most prevalent
and rapidly increasing chronic health problem in
industrialized countries," according to
researchers. Because industrial advances have brought
about increased chemical pollution in our environment,
patients suffering from chronic allergic diseases are
more heavily affected.
Chronic allergic diseases include bronchial asthma and
atopic dermatitis. Bronchial asthma is characterized by
recurring symptoms of wheezing, shortness of breath,
chest tightness, and coughing. Atopic dermatitis,
commonly known as eczema, is characterized by recurring
scaly and itchy rashes. Individuals with these
conditions may have a family history of allergies such
as hay fever or eczema.
Treatment of allergy symptoms often involves the use of
prescription or over-the-counter antihistamine or
decongestant medications. Unfortunately, these
medications may cause unwanted side effects such as
hyperactivity or drowsiness, increased blood pressure,
or dryness of the mouth, nose, and throat.
In search of an alternative treatment, researchers
conducted a study to evaluate the antiallergic effects
of perilla extract (Perilla frutescens)—an herb
prescribed for respiratory conditions in Traditional
Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Kampo (traditional Japanese
herbal medicine). Mice were orally administered perilla
extract or tranilast (an antiallergic drug) at a dose of
500 mg per kg of body weight. After 30 minutes, they
were injected with a substance to induce a severe
allergic reaction in the skin or saline to produce no
effect. Subsequently, the effects of perilla extract and
tranilast were compared and calculated.
Results demonstrated a 43% inhibition of allergic
reaction by perilla extract. This data led Makino and
colleagues to conclude in Biological &
Pharmaceutical Bulletin that "...oral treatment
[with] perilla [extract] suppresses allergic reaction."
